Role Overview
You will lead mechanical building services engineering on complex MEP projects from Nairobi, acting as the technical authority for design, site delivery, and commissioning across commercial, residential, and institutional developments. Day to day, you will move between producing detailed HVAC, plumbing, drainage, fire suppression, and LPG designs and supervising contractors on-site to ensure installations match approved specifications and international codes. Your work directly protects project quality, keeps construction on schedule, and ensures systems are fully tested and ready for client handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop complete mechanical system designs from concept through to construction, including load calculations, equipment selection, schematics, and schedules for HVAC, public health, fire protection, drainage, and LPG systems.
- Prepare and review tender documentation, respond to technical bidder queries, and evaluate contractor proposals against project requirements.
- Align mechanical layouts with architectural, structural, and electrical designs, resolving clashes and coordinating multi-disciplinary inputs during design and construction.
- Supervise mechanical installations on-site, inspecting work against approved drawings, identifying defects, and issuing formal reports with corrective actions.
- Review contractor submittals, including RFIs, shop drawings, material approvals, and technical proposals, before final sign-off by senior management.
- Witness and document testing and commissioning of mechanical systems, and verify as-built drawings, balance reports, and O&M manuals prior to handover.
- Monitor site progress, maintain defect logs, and prepare clear technical progress reports for project management and client briefings.
- Assist with technical review of contractor payment valuations, variation requests, and cost estimates to support commercial decisions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering from a recognised university.
- Full registration as a professional engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).
- At least 3 years of active engineering experience in building services, ideally gained within an established MEP consultancy environment.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit MEP for design, drafting, and multi-system coordination.
- Working knowledge of international codes including ASHRAE, NFPA, BS/EN standards, and the Kenyan Building Code.
- Proven ability to coordinate with architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, and main contractors on complex projects.
- Excellent written English skills, with the ability to produce detailed design reports, inspection logs, and technical specifications.
- Practical problem-solving skills for resolving on-site installation conflicts and design discrepancies quickly and effectively.
What We Offer / Why Join
- Direct involvement in high-impact commercial, residential, and institutional MEP developments across East Africa, with senior-level technical ownership.
- Clear scope for professional growth within a fast-expanding engineering consultancy, including exposure to full project lifecycle management.
- A competitive monthly gross salary package ranging from Kshs 80,000 to Kshs 100,000.
