Role Overview
This position leads the accounting function for a financial services company based in Kenya, taking ownership of the complete accounting cycle from transaction entry through to final reporting. Day to day, you will supervise the accounting team, ensure tax and payroll obligations are met accurately and on time, and drive improvements in how financial information is captured, reviewed, and reported. Your work directly supports the organization's ability to operate compliantly, make informed decisions, and scale its finance operations as the business grows.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the full accounting cycle, including journal entries, general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close activities.
- Prepare and present timely financial statements, management reports, and variance analyses that give leadership a clear view of performance.
- Oversee tax compliance across applicable jurisdictions, ensuring accurate and timely filing of returns and adherence to local regulatory requirements.
- Administer payroll processing end to end, verifying calculations, statutory deductions, and employee payments while maintaining confidentiality.
- Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team, assigning work, reviewing output, and building technical capability across the function.
- Design and implement process improvements that reduce manual effort, strengthen internal controls, and improve the accuracy of financial data.
- Serve as a key point of contact for audits, regulatory reviews, and external advisers, providing documentation and explanations as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure accounting policies are understood and followed consistently throughout the organization.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline.
- At least five years of hands-on accounting experience, with a proven track record in full-cycle accounting, payroll administration, and tax compliance.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing an accounting team, including reviewing work and supporting professional growth.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis techniques.
- English language proficiency at CEFR C1 level or above — mandatory.
- French language proficiency at CEFR A1 level or above — mandatory.
- This role is based in Kenya and requires 100% on-site attendance. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM Kenya time.
