Role Overview
This management position carries ownership of the firm's money end to end — from capturing chargeable time on a matter through to the cash landing in the bank, and from sourcing a supplier through to the invoice being settled. Sitting on the leadership team and reporting directly to the Managing Partner, the holder is the firm's financial conscience: shaping cash-flow strategy, tightening internal controls, and making sure every shilling owed to the practice is invoiced, chased, and collected. In a partnership where revenue depends on billable effort and client trust, this role directly determines whether the firm's numbers reflect the work actually performed.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Managing Partner's principal financial adviser, contributing to cash-flow forecasting, expenditure discipline, and profitability strategy across practice areas.
- Produce a daily cash-position snapshot, weekly billing and debtor trackers, and full monthly management accounts for leadership review.
- Own the general ledger and the transactional finance cycle — payables, receivables, payroll runs, petty cash, and reconciliation of bank and supplier statements.
- Run the fee-note process from work-in-progress through to final billing, monitoring unbilled fees, disbursements, client reimbursements, and trust account balances.
- Drive collections personally, including face-to-face follow-ups with slow-paying clients, maintaining aged-debtor reporting and logging agreed repayment commitments.
- Manage the complete procurement cycle — requisition approval, vendor sourcing, quotation comparison, due diligence, contract negotiation, and ongoing supplier performance review.
- Build and maintain internal controls that close off financial leakage, flag variances early, and prevent budget overruns; oversee statutory remittances for VAT, PAYE, withholding tax, and corporate tax.
- Liaise with external auditors, bankers, tax authorities and legal regulators, and supervise, coach, and appraise the finance, billing, and procurement staff assigned to the function.
Requirements & Qualifications
- KCSE mean grade of B (Plain) or its equivalent as a minimum.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a closely related discipline, at Second Class Honours, Upper Division or above.
- Completed CPA (K), ACCA, or an equivalent recognised professional accounting qualification.
- At least six years of progressive financial accounting experience, with a minimum of three of those years spent managing or supervising a finance team.
- Prior exposure to a law firm, professional services partnership, or other billable-hours environment is strongly preferred.
- Working command of legal practice accounting, time-and-billing systems, and ERP accounting software.
- Demonstrated negotiation ability with vendors, firmness in debtor conversations, strong analytical judgement, and an uncompromising ethical standard.
