Role Overview
This position focuses on building and managing a portfolio of small business customers, driving revenue through loans, deposits, and cross-sold products while maintaining strict adherence to credit and regulatory guidelines. Day to day, you will cultivate strategic partnerships, design tailored solutions alongside product teams, and lead a team of relationship officers to deepen client engagement and expand wallet share. Your work directly contributes to the bank's market growth, loan book quality, and long-term customer loyalty within the small business segment.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, negotiate, and manage external partnerships and alliances that create new business opportunities, enhance customer value, and extend the bank's reach in the small business market.
- Collaborate with branch teams, retail banking leadership, and product development to craft relevant value propositions, product bundles, and solutions specifically for small business clients.
- Direct and motivate a team of relationship officers who own day-to-day management of the SBE portfolio, setting performance expectations and providing coaching to achieve targets.
- Stay close to market trends and competitor activity, using that intelligence to shape acquisition, retention, and growth strategies for the segment.
- Make swift, balanced decisions that weigh revenue potential against credit risk and customer responsiveness, ensuring both profitability and service quality.
- Regularly assess the performance of assigned relationship officers or branch managers against agreed SBE budgets and KPIs, addressing gaps through follow-up and corrective action plans.
- Conduct frequent on-site visits to clients to strengthen relationships, understand evolving needs, and identify opportunities to increase the business's share of wallet.
- Monitor the loan portfolio for early signs of stress, including arrears, unauthorised excesses, and irregular account activity, and initiate appropriate preventive measures.
- Track and report achievement against set targets, recommending adjustments to improve outcomes where needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent.
- Professional banking certification – AKIB or ACIB is preferred.
- Minimum four years of hands-on experience in business development, ideally within a banking or financial services environment.
- Solid understanding of the bank's operational policies, credit procedures, and compliance standards relevant to lending and customer management.
- Familiarity with retail banking product offerings and the specific value drivers for small business customers.
- Knowledge of area-level sales and service strategies, and how they translate into daily team execution.
- Self-motivated with strong administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills; proven ability to organise work and negotiate effectively.
- Analytical mindset capable of reviewing portfolio metrics and making data-informed decisions.
