Role Overview
This role leads the Teaching and Learning department of the university, overseeing every stage of the student academic lifecycle—from initial admissions and registration through examination management, record-keeping, and graduation. The Registrar ensures that academic policies and regulations are consistently applied, that institutional data remains secure and accurate, and that committees receive the operational support they need to make informed decisions. By coordinating staff, budgets, and risk management, this position directly upholds the university’s academic standards and strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the daily operations of student admissions, registration, academic records, examinations, and related support functions, ensuring alignment with the university’s mission and vision.
- Develop, implement, and enforce academic policies, regulations, and procedures, and interpret them for Senate and Deans’ committees.
- Prepare annual departmental work plans and budgets in collaboration with section heads, then monitor monthly and quarterly performance reports to guide management decisions.
- Supervise the entire examination cycle—maintaining course and final exam schedules, overseeing the secure preparation and custody of exam materials, and processing the logistics and payments for External Examiners.
- Manage the integrity, confidentiality, and security of all current and former student academic records, including credit transfers, degree verifications, official transcripts, and graduation certification.
- Plan and execute graduation ceremonies and all related activities, from programme declarations and student placement capacities to the final certification of degrees.
- Evaluate staff performance within the department, ensuring that service levels meet expected standards, and maintain a risk register to identify and mitigate operational risks.
- Provide secretariat services to Senate and Deans’ committees, coordinating the implementation of Senate decisions and ensuring minutes and follow-up actions are accurately documented.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A PhD in Public Administration, Business Administration, Human Resource Management, or an equivalent field from an accredited university.
- A Master’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Human Resource Management, or an equivalent field from an accredited university.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Human Resource Management, or an equivalent field from an accredited university.
- A minimum of ten years of relevant experience at a university, with at least four years in a management role.
- Must have attained the rank of Senior Lecturer.
- A certificate in leadership and management.
- Registered membership of a recognised professional body.
- Deep understanding of university governance, academic regulations, and higher education quality assurance and accreditation.
- Proven leadership, people management, organisational, and planning skills.
- High ethical standards and integrity, with strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Competence in student information systems, data management, and familiarity with relevant higher education laws and policies.
