Job Description

Role Overview

This role sits at the front line of identifying and supporting children with special needs and disabilities, acting as the first point of contact for families, schools and community partners who need a clear picture of a child's functional abilities. The post holder conducts structured functional assessments, interprets what those results mean in practice, and translates them into concrete next steps — a suitable educational placement, a referral to a specialist provider, or both. Because those decisions shape a child's learning path and access to support, the accuracy, consistency and documentation behind this work directly determines how well the wider assessment and placement system performs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out functional assessments of children with special needs and disabilities, drawing information from parents, teachers, caregivers and direct observation.
  • Identify children who may have special needs or disabilities through screening, referrals and community-level contact, and recommend them for placement in schools and institutions.
  • Match assessed children to appropriate educational programmes and monitor whether the placement continues to meet the child's needs.
  • Refer assessed children onward to health, therapy, social or other specialist service providers when additional support is required.
  • Keep accurate assessment records and compile data on assessment activity to support reporting, planning and service improvement.
  • Train and support assessment staff in functional assessment methods, tools and consistent reporting standards.
  • Create awareness and build the capacity of teachers, parents and other stakeholders through sensitisation sessions, training and information sharing.
  • Participate in community outreach activities that promote understanding of disabilities and reduce stigma around special needs.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education with a specialisation in Special Needs, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
  • At least two (2) years' experience working in functional assessment.
  • Current membership of a relevant professional body, held in good standing.
  • Practical knowledge of functional assessment tools and techniques used with children who have special needs and disabilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with children, parents, teachers and community members.
  • Confidence in training, mentoring and guiding other assessment staff.
  • Solid record-keeping and data-handling skills for reporting on assessment outcomes.
  • Sensitivity to disability issues, with a commitment to inclusive education.
  • Comfortable working in community and outreach settings as well as in schools and institutions.
