Role Overview
This internship places you inside the CITES MIKE (Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants) Unit in Nairobi, where you will support the team's communication, event organisation, and data-related tasks. You will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, helping to turn complex wildlife conservation data into clear materials for workshops, steering committees, and range-state engagement. Your contribution helps keep elephant conservation efforts coordinated, informed, and visible across Africa and Asia.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the logistical and administrative preparation of MIKE meetings, including Subregional Steering Committee sessions, training workshops, and Technical Advisory Group meetings, by handling travel arrangements, participant coordination, and document flow.
- Adapt and develop training and communication materials for MIKE workshops, ensuring they are relevant and easy for participants from different countries to use.
- Draft minutes, compile pre- and post-meeting documentation, and circulate materials to participants in a timely manner.
- Help compile and organise MIKE data on illegal elephant killing trends, making sure datasets are accurate and accessible for analysis and reporting.
- Prepare summaries, briefing notes, and internal updates based on MIKE reports and findings, translating technical content for non-specialist audiences.
- Maintain shared files on SharePoint and other platforms, archiving documents and updating internal tracking systems, calendars, and planning tools.
- Assist with communication tasks that keep elephant range states engaged with MIKE-related matters and informed of programme progress.
- Carry out additional administrative and research tasks assigned by the supervisor to support the smooth running of the MIKE Unit.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree (bachelor's level or equivalent), or be enrolled in a graduate programme (master's, PhD, or equivalent), or have recently graduated with a university degree.
- Hold an academic background in wildlife conservation, environmental management, project management, business management, or a closely related field relevant to this internship.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in and motivation for wildlife conservation, with particular focus on elephant conservation and the illegal wildlife trade.
- No prior professional work experience is required, but your field of study must be clearly relevant to the duties of this internship.
- Be fluent in English in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding; knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
- Be able to work effectively with diverse teams, manage multiple administrative tasks, and communicate clearly in writing and in person.
