Role Overview
You will take charge of a faecal sludge treatment plant and associated resource-recovery operations, ensuring that every stage of the treatment chain runs safely, efficiently, and in full alignment with national environmental and sanitation rules. Beyond daily plant management, you will play a commercial role: turning treated waste into marketable products such as compost and briquettes, building a reliable customer base, and strengthening the facility’s financial sustainability. Your work directly supports public health and environmental protection while demonstrating that waste streams can become valuable resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct day-to-day operations of the faecal sludge treatment plant and any connected resource-recovery units, coordinating shift activities, process flows, and staff deployment.
- Ensure every operational aspect complies with EMCA, NEMA, WASREB directives, and county-level sanitation bylaws, keeping accurate records for audits and inspections.
- Monitor treatment performance across all stages, oversee laboratory sampling and testing, and adjust process variables to maintain quality and safety standards.
- Prepare detailed operational reports, contribute to budgeting and planning, and liaise regularly with the Director of Sanitation on plant performance and improvement priorities.
- Supervise, coach, and train plant operators and production teams, ensuring they work safely, follow biosafety protocols, and meet productivity targets.
- Apply and enforce OSHA 2007 safety standards by conducting hazard assessments, promoting a safety-first culture, and ensuring protective equipment is used correctly.
- Drive business development for recovered products such as compost and briquettes: researching markets, building client relationships, coordinating deliveries, and supporting branding or promotional campaigns.
- Maintain preventive maintenance schedules for all plant equipment, manage asset registers, and coordinate timely repairs to avoid operational downtime.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Water, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
- At least five years of hands-on experience in wastewater treatment, faecal sludge management, resource recovery, or industrial plant operations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, assign work, and deliver results through others, including prior supervisory experience.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills, with exceptional report-writing, analytical, and planning abilities.
- Solid computer literacy, including proficiency with spreadsheets, operational tracking tools, and standard office software.
- Knowledge of process control, quality assurance, and laboratory coordination within a treatment environment.
- Business acumen and customer-relations experience, particularly in sales, product marketing, or business development—considered a distinct advantage.
- Unquestioned integrity, accountability, and a proactive approach to safety, environmental compliance, and stakeholder communication.
