Solar Installation Technician

Role Overview

As a Solar Installation Technician Assistant, you will be the second pair of hands that keeps every field job moving — from unloading mounting rails at a rooftop site to helping terminate cables and confirm a system is generating before the crew packs up. Working alongside qualified technicians and engineers, you will help ensure each photovoltaic installation is mounted correctly, wired safely, and left in a condition the customer can rely on for years. The role suits someone building a career in renewables who wants hands-on exposure to the full lifecycle of a PV system rather than a narrow slice of it.

Key Responsibilities

• Support technicians through the complete installation cycle — mounting solar modules, positioning inverters and batteries, and setting up charge controllers on both rooftop and ground-mounted structures.
• Prepare for each job by gathering, inspecting, loading and unloading the tools, cables, mounting hardware and system components needed on site.
• Help align and secure panels according to the technician's layout and fixing instructions, checking that arrays sit level, square and firmly attached.
• Assist with routing and dressing cables and making electrical connections and terminations under direct supervision.
• Take part in site visits — taking measurements, noting roof or ground conditions, and recording anything that could affect how the installation is carried out.
• Join testing, commissioning and fault-finding activities so that every system is verified as working correctly before handover.
• Carry out routine servicing such as cleaning panels and inspecting mounts, connectors, cabling and enclosures for wear, corrosion or damage.
• Report faulty equipment, broken components and safety hazards promptly to the supervising technician, keep the worksite clean and organised, and log materials used and work completed accurately.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installation, Renewable Energy, Solar PV Technology or a comparable technical discipline from a recognised institution.
• Around six months of hands-on exposure to solar installation, general electrical work or a technical apprenticeship is an advantage, though strong entry-level candidates will be considered.
• Basic understanding of how a PV system fits together — panels, inverters, batteries, charge controllers — along with fundamental wiring practice.
• Ability to read and interpret simple electrical diagrams is a plus.
• EPRA T2 or T3 solar PV certification is an added advantage.
• Willingness and physical fitness to work outdoors, at height and across varying field locations, handling tools, ladders and heavy equipment.
• Safety-conscious approach, including correct use of personal protective equipment and adherence to electrical regulations on every job.
• Reliable timekeeping, a methodical eye for detail and quality workmanship, and the ability to communicate and cooperate well with technicians, engineers and clients.
• Genuine appetite to learn — you should be comfortable asking questions, absorbing training and steadily expanding your technical knowledge of solar energy systems.
