Solar Installation Technician

Role Overview

This is a hands-on field position for someone who wants to build a career in solar photovoltaic work by doing the job alongside seasoned installers. Day to day, you will be on rooftops, at ground-mount frames, and inside plant rooms, helping to set panels, run cable, mount inverters and batteries, and put finished systems through their paces before they are handed over to the client. The role matters because a solar project is only as good as the crew behind it: your preparation, care with tools, and early spotting of faults keep installations running on schedule, within electrical safety rules, and performing as designed long after the team has left site.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with the lead technician to mount and align PV modules on rooftops and ground-mounted structures, inverters, batteries, charge controllers, and related balance-of-system hardware.
• Pull, route, and terminate cables and make the electrical connections that tie panels, combiner boxes, controllers, and inverters into a working system, following the supervising technician's instructions.
• Gather, check, load, and move tools, materials, and equipment to and around each job site, making sure nothing needed for the day's work is missing or damaged.
• Take part in site visits, recording measurements and noting roof condition, shading, mounting points, and other details that shape how the installation is planned.
• Support testing, commissioning, and fault-finding — checking voltages and connections, verifying that equipment starts and runs correctly, and helping trace the cause when something does not.
• Carry out scheduled servicing such as cleaning modules and inspecting mounts, cabling, enclosures, and components for wear or damage.
• Report faulty equipment, broken parts, and unsafe conditions to the supervising technician straight away, and work only with the correct personal protective equipment and safe electrical practices.
• Keep written notes on materials consumed, work completed, and service visits, and leave every site tidy with equipment handled and stored properly.
• Represent the company courteously when dealing with clients during installation and maintenance visits, and coordinate with technicians, engineers, and other crew members to finish jobs on time.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installation, Renewable Energy, Solar PV Technology, or a comparable technical discipline from a recognised institution.
• At least six months of practical exposure to solar installation, general electrical work, or a technical apprenticeship — this is an advantage rather than a barrier for the right candidate.
• Working understanding of how PV systems are put together, how electrical wiring is run, and how solar equipment such as inverters, batteries, and controllers operates.
• Ability to read and follow basic electrical diagrams is an added advantage.
• Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors, at height, and across different field locations, including handling tools and equipment of the trade.
• Solar PV certification such as EPRA T2 or T3 is an added advantage.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship, with a genuine safety-first mindset.
• Dependable timekeeping, sound teamwork, clear communication, and a practical approach to solving problems on site.
• Technical aptitude and a real willingness to learn, including through the technical training the role involves, plus the adaptability that field-based work demands.
