Role Overview
This position is responsible for the accurate preparation, dispensing, and management of medications within a high-volume health facility. Day-to-day tasks include verifying prescriptions, maintaining pharmaceutical inventory, and ensuring strict adherence to regulatory standards set by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. The role directly supports patient safety and operational efficiency, making it essential to the facility’s commitment to quality care.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and interpret prescriptions, preparing and dispensing medicines in accordance with established protocols and legal requirements.
- Maintain accurate patient medication records and update hospital management systems with dispensing data.
- Monitor stock levels of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, initiating timely orders to prevent shortages.
- Conduct routine checks on drug storage conditions, expiry dates, and proper labeling to ensure safety and compliance.
- Provide clear medication counselling to patients, including dosage instructions and potential side effects.
- Collaborate with nursing and medical staff to resolve prescription queries or potential drug interactions.
- Participate in periodic stock audits, documentation of controlled substances, and reporting of any discrepancies.
- Assist in training or supervising junior pharmacy staff or interns when required.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution.
- Current registration with the Pharmacies and Poisons Board (Kenya).
- At least one year of continuous working experience in a busy health facility.
- Proficiency in computer applications, especially experience with Hospital Management Systems.
- Working experience in a tertiary learning institution is considered an strong advantage.
- Must satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 (e.g., valid clearance certificates).
- Strong attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and good interpersonal communication skills.
