Optometrist (Locum)

Role Overview

This position involves performing full-scope optometric care, from detailed eye examinations to diagnosis and treatment of ocular conditions. You will work directly with patients to prescribe corrective lenses and manage a range of eye health issues, collaborating closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care. The role is critical in supporting patients’ long-term vision health through accurate assessment, tailored treatment plans, and clear patient education.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out thorough eye exams, assessing visual acuity, refractive errors, binocular vision, and overall ocular health using diagnostic equipment.
• Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids based on individual patient needs, lifestyle, and occupational demands.
• Identify and manage common eye disorders such as dry eyes, conjunctivitis, astigmatism, and strabismus; develop treatment plans and prescribe medications as appropriate.
• Conduct contact lens fittings, evaluate patient suitability, and instruct on proper insertion, removal, and hygiene to prevent complications.
• Provide pre-operative assessments and post-operative follow-up for patients undergoing cataract, refractive, or corneal surgeries, monitoring healing and managing any issues.
• Design and implement vision therapy programs using exercises, specialised lenses, and techniques to improve eye coordination, focus, and visual perception.
• Educate patients on eye health best practices, lifestyle factors affecting vision (nutrition, screen time, environmental conditions), and the importance of protective eyewear for occupational safety.
• Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, including examination findings, diagnoses, prescriptions, and follow-up plans, while adhering to clinic protocols and regulatory standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Optometry from a recognised institution.
• Current licensure as an Optometrist with the Optometrists’ Association of Kenya.
• Minimum of one (1) year of practical experience in a clinical optometry setting.
• Proficiency in computer applications for record-keeping and scheduling.
• Strong knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and a wide range of eye conditions.
• Ability to accurately prescribe and fit corrective lenses and contact lenses.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for patient interaction and interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Detail-oriented approach to record-keeping and ability to work independently as well as part of a healthcare team.
