Meteorological Technician

Role Overview

This position keeps weather surveillance running for a naval meteorological operation, combining hands-on instrument care with real-time observation and reporting. The person in this role watches the sky, maintains automated observing systems, and turns raw atmospheric data into usable products that help aviation, engineering, and operational teams make safe decisions. Because the work supports deployed missions, accuracy and timeliness directly affect readiness and safety in challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Run, adjust, and service weather monitoring instruments and automated observation platforms so they remain reliable and within calibration.
• Produce and distribute routine and special weather reports following Navy and contractor requirements.
• Compile observational data, track developing weather patterns, and provide input that supports forecasting efforts.
• Watch for severe or hazardous weather and issue prompt alerts to operational personnel who depend on current conditions.
• Keep detailed logs, digital records, and equipment maintenance histories accurate and up to date.
• Coordinate with engineering, aviation, and operations teams to verify weather data quality and support mission readiness.
• Carry out additional related tasks consistent with the scope and level of the position.

Requirements & Qualifications

Required

• At least two years of experience in meteorology, atmospheric science, or weather observation.
• Two years of hands-on experience with the AN/FPS-081 SWR, ASOS, the 3140 Manual, METOC operations, and the UMQ-5.
• Training and certification under NAVMETOCCOMINST 3140.1, U.S. Navy METOC Support System, for the Weather Radar System (AN/FPS-081 SWR).
• High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in meteorology is preferred.
• Valid passport and ability to travel internationally; passport must remain valid for at least one year beyond the hire date.
• Ability to obtain country-specific visas according to the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
• Ability to meet and maintain contract medical requirements throughout the deployment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials and authorization.
• Ability to read, speak, and understand English well enough to perform contract duties and follow installation emergency procedures.

Preferred

• Previous work in an austere OCONUS setting with a multi-national workforce.
• Familiarity with meteorological instruments, automated weather systems, and data analysis tools.
• Strong attention to detail, analytical ability, and the capacity to work independently.
• Valid driver’s license.
