Job Description

Role Overview

As a locum nurse, you will step into a temporary care role within our health facility, delivering hands-on nursing to patients while helping the permanent team maintain uninterrupted service. Each shift involves patient assessment, medication administration, maternity support, and precise record-keeping, all performed according to national nursing standards and hospital safety policies. Your presence directly strengthens the facility’s capacity to respond to fluctuating patient volumes and ensures that quality care continues even when regular staffing is stretched.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess patients during ward rounds, observe their condition, and prepare clear shift reports for the clinical team.
  • Create, implement, and revise nursing care plans based on patient progress and changing medical needs.
  • Administer prescribed medications and IV fluids, monitor transfusions for side effects, and handle any adverse reactions promptly.
  • Provide obstetric and newborn care, including monitoring mothers in labour, carrying out normal deliveries, and resuscitating babies as required.
  • Deliver family planning, maternal and child health, and counselling services, while educating patients on preventive care.
  • Follow infection prevention SOPs by sterilising instruments, sluicing equipment, dressing wounds, and removing stitches under hygienic conditions.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential patient records and communicate significant changes in patient status to the supervising practitioner or doctor.
  • Assist in theatre procedures and ensure patients in transit to referral facilities receive appropriate nursing care during transfer.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) from a recognised institution.
  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya and possession of a valid practising licence.
  • Minimum of two years’ hands-on nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, or other related healthcare setting.
  • Sound working knowledge of IV therapy, blood transfusions, infection control measures, and maternal/child health nursing.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound clinical judgments in emergency situations, including during labour and newborn resuscitation.
  • Strong documentation habits, good observational skills, and respect for patient confidentiality and dignity.
