Job Description
Role Overview
This internship is embedded in the Nandi Carbon project, where you will work alongside the MEAL Assistant and MEARL Coordinator to ensure the accuracy and reliability of project data. Day to day, you will support the verification of reported numbers from tree nurseries and planted seedlings, conduct survival monitoring, and help maintain the project’s monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) system. Your work directly contributes to program quality assurance, accountability to beneficiaries, and evidence-based decision-making for the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in collecting, organising, and verifying the accuracy of field data (quality assurance/quality control) before it is entered into the project database.
- Support the day-to-day operation and troubleshooting of the CommCare-based MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) system used to track nursery and planting data.
- Enter data into the CommCare system and other tools, then produce summaries and trend reports for program teams as requested.
- Maintain an updated project database, regularly share it with relevant staff, and retrieve information needed for reporting and learning.
- Facilitate community feedback sessions and beneficiary focus group discussions, document comments, and ensure follow-up with the appropriate departments.
- Collect and document human-interest stories and case studies that illustrate best practices and project impact.
- Conduct data quality audits and spot checks, and provide on-the-job training to field staff on proper data and information management.
- Support beneficiary accountability mechanisms by ensuring comments and complaints are logged and addressed in line with the accountability framework.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Demography, Population Studies, Development Studies, or a related field from a recognised university.
- Ability to perform comprehensive literature and secondary data reviews.
- Strong organisational, facilitation, presentation, and verbal/written communication skills.
- Proven capacity to gather information from diverse stakeholders and turn it into clear materials that support programme work.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and adapt to challenges in a field setting.
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Willingness to sign and adhere to the organisation’s child safeguarding policy.
- Competent computer skills (Microsoft Office, databases, and ideally experience with data collection tools like CommCare).
What We Offer / Why Join
This is a learning-focused internship that provides hands-on exposure to MEAL practices within a real carbon project. You will receive mentorship from experienced MEARL staff, develop skills in data management, accountability, and field monitoring, and gain insight into programme quality processes at an international NGO. The role also offers the chance to contribute to environmental and community-centred work in the Nandi region.
