Job Description

Role Overview

You will lead the design and delivery of market access strategies that bring innovative medicines to patients across sub-Saharan Africa, with Nairobi as your home base and the region as your remit. Your focus is on opening and expanding public-sector channels—government procurement, tenders, reimbursement frameworks, and national health programs—so that treatments reach those who need them, while also supporting the company's growth and long-term presence in the region. Day to day, you will engage senior government and health-system stakeholders, shape policy discussions, and orchestrate cross-functional teams to turn access plans into measurable patient impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and implement market access strategies for priority countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with a strong emphasis on public-sector pathways such as government tenders, national procurement systems, and public health program rollout.
  • Cultivate durable relationships with Ministries of Health, national payer and insurance bodies, and regulatory agencies to secure inclusion on Essential Medicines Lists, reimbursement schedules, and clinical treatment protocols.
  • Identify, negotiate, and manage partnerships with development organizations, multilaterals, NGOs, and private-sector actors to create co-funded, multi-stakeholder access models that are both sustainable and scalable.
  • Connect access strategies with wider health-system strengthening efforts, including improvements to diagnostic pathways, healthcare worker training, and patient referral or support services.
  • Serve as the central coordination point across Commercial, Medical, Corporate Affairs, and Global Access teams, ensuring that patient-access priorities are fully aligned with business objectives and market realities.
  • Lead multi-country initiatives, assess what works at the local level, and drive the replication and scaling of successful models across the region in support of the company's 2030 access ambitions.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Master's degree or equivalent in Public Health, Health Economics, Policy, Life Sciences, Business, or a related discipline.
  • 7 to 10 or more years of professional experience in Market Access, Public Affairs, or Health Policy, with hands-on expertise in government engagement, pricing, reimbursement mechanisms, and tender systems.
  • A demonstrated record of building and executing access strategies in African or comparable emerging markets, including multi-country or regional exposure.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to earn trust and credibility among senior government officials, health-system leaders, and development partners.
  • Strong strategic thinking paired with commercial judgement, and a pragmatic, entrepreneurial mindset that thrives on solving complex access challenges.
  • Experience working on access-to-medicines initiatives, inclusive business models, or alongside international NGOs and donor partners is a significant plus.

What We Offer / Why Join

You will be part of International Operations, the company's largest operational unit, which spans 194 countries and serves around 35 million patients each day. Working within the high-growth Middle Africa affiliate, you will be at the crossroads of policy, partnership, and healthcare transformation—where commercial performance and societal impact are treated not as competing goals but as mutually reinforcing ones. This is a chance to take on a challenging, externally facing role with real regional influence and the satisfaction of knowing that your work directly expands access to innovative medicines for patients who currently miss out.
