Role Overview
This position sits within the Bank’s finance team and is accountable for tax administration and fixed-asset accounting across the Bank and its subsidiaries. Each day involves preparing tax filings and statutory remittances, reconciling tax accounts, advising business units on tax matters, and ensuring that fixed assets are recorded, depreciated, and reported in line with IFRS and internal policies. The role exists to keep the Bank fully compliant with Kenyan tax legislation, protect it from unnecessary tax exposure, and maintain reliable asset records that support sound financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and file all tax returns through iTax within statutory deadlines, ensuring the Bank remits the correct amounts for all applicable taxes.
- Reconcile tax accounts regularly and work to clear any outstanding items or queries raised by tax authorities.
- Provide day-to-day tax guidance to business units, ERP implementation teams, and product owners so that new systems and banking products apply the correct tax treatment.
- Perform monthly, quarterly, half-year, and annual tax computations for the Bank and its subsidiaries, covering all relevant revenue and payment streams.
- Maintain the Fixed Assets Register to ensure all acquisitions are capitalised promptly, categorised correctly, and captured with the necessary supporting approval and insurance details.
- Run monthly depreciation postings in accordance with IFRS and Bank policy, and prepare periodic fixed-asset schedules, movement analysis, and management reports.
- Work with KRA, external auditors, regulators, and internal stakeholders during tax audits and inspections, supplying requested documentation and resolving issues.
- Strengthen internal controls around tax and fixed assets, periodically reviewing transaction processing systems to confirm customer taxes are charged and recovered accurately.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Banking, or another business-related discipline from a recognised university.
- Professional accounting certification such as CPA(K) or ACCA; a Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- At least five years of experience in financial accounting and reporting, with a minimum of three years at a management level.
- A minimum of three years of tax experience specifically within the banking sector.
- Strong analytical capability and attention to detail, with the ability to work through complex tax computations and reconciliations.
- Proven ability to plan workloads, prioritise deadlines, and deliver accurate results under pressure.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, both written and presentation-based.
- Self-driven and proactive, with a collaborative approach to working with colleagues and external parties.
