Role Overview
In this accounting role, you will manage day-to-day transaction records and help keep the organisation’s project and departmental finances accurate, traceable, and within budget. Your work will support timely reporting, responsible use of funds, payroll compliance, and reliable financial information for management, donors, and auditors.
Key Responsibilities
- Enter daily transactions in accordance with applicable accounting standards, maintaining complete ledgers and journals.
- Process invoices, receipts, payment vouchers, and petty cash, and check that each transaction has adequate supporting documents.
- Prepare monthly bank, cash, and mobile money reconciliations; monitor supplier balances and staff or project advances, and follow up on discrepancies.
- Assist with departmental and project budgets, compare actual spending with approved budget lines, and alert relevant colleagues to variances or potential overspending.
- Develop cost analyses to inform procurement and operational decisions, while applying controls that reduce the risk of incorrect or unauthorised expenditure.
- Support payroll preparation and salary payments, maintain payroll and benefits records, and prepare statutory deductions, including PAYE, NSSF, SHIF, and AHL, for remittance.
- Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and provide clear, verifiable records for internal and external audits and donor or regulatory reviews.
- Update asset records, assist with periodic asset checks, and coordinate with procurement and stores colleagues on inventory movements and valuation.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.
- CPA qualification at Section 2 or 3 level or above; CPA(K) is an advantage.
- At least four years of practical accounting experience supporting community development projects in rural Kenya, preferably in an NGO or donor-funded environment.
- Demonstrated capability in account reconciliations, financial reporting, and maintaining effective financial controls.
- Proficiency with accounting software. Experience using Odoo ERP is an advantage; training can be provided.
- Careful, transparent working practices and the ability to maintain accurate financial records in line with internal policies and donor requirements.
