Lecturer - Applied Linguistics

Role Overview

This faculty position in Applied Linguistics involves teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses while actively contributing to the department’s research agenda. Day-to-day work includes preparing and delivering lectures, designing assessments, supervising postgraduate theses, and collaborating with colleagues to develop curricula that address real-world language needs. The role is central to the university’s mission of producing graduates who can apply linguistic knowledge to societal challenges, from multilingual education to community-based language planning.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach courses in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, TESOL, sociolinguistics, and related areas across both face‑to‑face and e‑learning platforms.
• Supervise postgraduate students’ research projects, theses, and dissertations in applied linguistics and language education.
• Design and implement innovative teaching methods, including blended learning approaches and AI‑assisted tools, to enhance student engagement and outcomes.
• Conduct independent and collaborative research that results in refereed journal publications and conference presentations.
• Contribute to programme development by reviewing curricula, proposing new courses, and integrating emerging trends such as corpus linguistics and discourse analysis.
• Participate in departmental and university service activities, including academic advising, committee work, and community outreach related to language and multilingualism.
• Develop and administer language assessments and testing instruments for placement, progress, and evaluation purposes.
• Mentor junior faculty and graduate assistants in pedagogical best practices and research methodologies.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Earned PhD in Applied Linguistics from a recognised university, with a dissertation that explores how languages interact with real‑world issues (e.g., language policy, bilingualism, or community language needs).
• Minimum of 24 publication points, of which at least 16 must be from articles in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Registration with the relevant professional body (where applicable) in the field of linguistics or language education.
• Demonstrated university‑level teaching experience in applied linguistics, language education, or related courses.
• Evidence of research productivity or potential, such as publications, conference presentations, or active research projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, organisational ability, and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse academic environment.
• Expertise in at least one of the following areas: second language acquisition, language assessment/testing, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, bilingualism/multilingualism, or English for Academic Purposes.
• Experience with e‑learning platforms, blended learning, and innovative teaching methods, including the integration of AI in instruction.
• Prior experience supervising postgraduate students and contributing to academic programme development.
• Specialisation in either Language Education and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or Sociolinguistics with a focus on language and community needs.
