Role Overview

This position centres on teaching learners in the Junior Secondary School (JSS) section, where you will be responsible for delivering engaging, competency-based lessons that help students transition smoothly from primary to secondary education. Day to day, you will plan and execute lessons in your subject areas, assess learner progress continuously, and contribute to curriculating an inclusive, disciplined and supportive classroom culture. Your work matters because the JSS years are a critical phase for building students’ foundational knowledge, practical skills, and confidence – shaping their readiness for the Senior School cycle and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and present lessons that align with the Ministry of Education’s Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and the specific learning outcomes for the JSS level.
• Develop and use diverse teaching materials, including digital and low-tech resources, to cater to different learning paces and abilities in the classroom.
• Set, administer, and mark assessments, ensuring that evaluation methods are fair, varied, and aligned with the national guidelines.
• Track and record individual learner performance, using insights to adapt teaching strategies and provide targeted intervention for students who struggle or excel.
• Maintain classroom discipline and foster a positive learning environment where every student feels respected, encouraged, and motivated to participate.
• Undertake pastoral responsibilities by identifying learners with academic, emotional, or social challenges and liaising with colleagues, parents, and school counsellors as needed.
• Support co-curricular activities within the school, helping to nurture learners’ talents in sports, clubs, and other creative, wellness and academic competitions.
• Take part in professional staff meetings, lesson observations and teacher development workshops led by the school administration or TSC officials.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Must be a TSC-certified teacher, currently registered and in good standing with the Teachers Service Commission.
• At least three years of teaching experience, ideally including time spent dealing with learners in upper primary or junior secondary age groups.
• A demonstrated ability to teach in the JSS section, showing familiarity with the CBC curriculum, assessment rubrics, and learner-centred pedagogy.
• A relevant teaching qualification, such as a diploma or degree in education, with applicable subject specialisation for junior school teaching.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, enough to deliver clear instructions and maintain constructive communication with learners and parents.
• Effective classroom management skills and a professional, ethical attitude that upholds the standards of the teaching service and the school’s mission.
• Proficiency in designing lesson notes, schemes of work and records of work in the formats recognised by Kenyan schools and TSC guidelines.
