Job Description

Role Overview

This is a hands-on teaching and supervision role for an experienced registered nurse who will train students in the classroom, the skills laboratory, and real hospital wards. You will coordinate clinical rotations, assess learners against professional competencies, and help students bridge theoretical knowledge with safe patient care. Your day-to-day effort directly shapes the quality and discipline of the future clinical medicine workforce attached to a university-based programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver practical clinical instruction in both ward settings and the skills laboratory, demonstrating correct techniques and overseeing student practice until proficiency is reached.
  • Coordinate student rotation schedules, conduct site visits, and clarify the duties, boundaries, and professional expectations learners must observe within different clinical departments.
  • Develop, update, and review standard operating procedures for clinical instruction, as well as practical manuals for skills laboratory sessions and ward-based learning activities.
  • Design and administer formative and summative assessments, including observed clinical skills demonstrations, competency checklists, and written practical examinations, with timely feedback.
  • Plan and execute equipment maintenance routines for the skills laboratory, ensuring manikins, task trainers, monitors, and consumables remain safe, hygienic, and ready for daily teaching.
  • Serve as a mentor and coach for students throughout their clinical training, supporting their confidence, ethical conduct, and professional growth while identifying struggling learners early.
  • Advise the department and university on clinical instruction resources, hospital placement issues, and policy improvements relating to student welfare and assessment standards.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Clinical Medicine programme during community outreach initiatives and liaison with partner health facilities, reinforcing the institution's values and reputation.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognised institution.
  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya, accompanied by a valid practising licence.
  • At least five years of clinical practice in a Level 5 hospital environment; previous experience in a clinical instruction or clinical teaching role is a distinct advantage.
  • Strong supervision and people-management capabilities, including the ability to direct students across multiple wards, shifts, and external training sites.
  • Excellent teaching and presentation skills, with comfort demonstrating clinical procedures to small and large learner groups.
  • Sound research and analytical skills to support evidence-based updates to manuals and assessment tools.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and teamwork skills, with a professional demeanour suited to a values-driven academic environment.
  • Computer literacy for documenting student progress, managing schedules, and preparing teaching resources.
  • High integrity, honesty, and adherence to Christian values in both professional practice and student interaction.
