Graduate Advocacy & External Engagement Intern

Role Overview

This 12-month graduate internship is embedded within the East Africa regional advocacy and external engagement team of a Christian humanitarian organisation. Day to day, you will support the team by coordinating meeting cycles, maintaining advocacy documentation, researching policy issues, and helping to translate children's voices into regional reports and campaign materials. The role exists to help the region deliver on its child-wellbeing and advocacy outcomes, including the ENOUGH campaign to end child hunger and malnutrition, while giving you structured mentorship and coaching for your own professional and spiritual growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate the regular rhythm of advocacy and external engagement meetings, including quarterly regional advocacy forums, bimonthly calls with nine field offices, and external engagement sessions; prepare agendas, circulate notes, and file materials on Box.
• Keep contact lists for regional and external partners current, organise advocacy documents on shared platforms, draft the quarterly board report, and compile a one-year overview of key events with figures on people and children reached.
• Build and maintain Excel trackers for advocacy performance documents such as annual plans, the Advocacy Maturity Matrix, strategic measures, capacity statements, and external engagement plans, and flag regional trends for the wider team.
• Produce two policy briefs across the internship, refresh a regional statistics table each quarter, gather children's voices from ENOUGH campaign launches, and compile them into a regional report while tracking policy-change priorities across nine field offices.
• Support external engagement work by scheduling high-level meetings, reviewing the external engagement tracker, following up with team members, and tracking humanitarian advocacy messaging for four field offices each quarter.
• Provide administrative and logistical support for regional advocacy meetings, workshops, launches, conferences, and forums, including drafting budgets, arranging flights and accommodation, coordinating visas and ground transport, and preparing advocacy materials.
• Upload regional advocacy statements, policy briefs, and related documents to external platforms including WV Central, Relief Web, and Box, and help organise quarterly meetings and one physical gathering for the regional Children's Council.
• Assist with amplifying children's voices through social media caption development, monitoring online responses, and preparing content and staff notes for commemorative days.

Requirements & Qualifications

• One to two years of practical experience in advocacy, external engagement, campaigns, or policy analysis, preferably in developing country contexts.
• Working knowledge of child rights frameworks, including the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and/or the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
• Experience planning or organising workshops, forums, or similar events involving participants from multiple countries.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with an ability to work well in cross-cultural environments.
• Solid planning and organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise multiple activities and meet deadlines.
• Research experience related to policy, advocacy, or child rights.
• Genuine understanding of humanitarian and fragile contexts and how they affect children and communities.
• A bachelor's degree in social sciences, communication, public policy, management, law, or a related field; a training certificate in advocacy, child rights, or policy influence is an added advantage.
• Must have graduated within the last two years and be available for a full-time 12-month placement.
