Job Description

Role Overview

This position involves installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks for a leading telecom provider. Every day, you’ll work on outdoor and indoor cabling—both overhead and underground—using specialised splicing and testing tools to ensure customers receive reliable, high-speed internet. Your hands-on work not only keeps the network running smoothly but also directly improves the end-user experience through prompt fault resolution and clear technical support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Splice and terminate fiber optic feeder, distribution, and drop cables to create secure, low-loss connections.
  • Install and maintain fiber access terminals, joint closures, and pedestals in both residential and commercial settings.
  • Use OTDRs, power meters, and visual fault locators to test new installations and diagnose line faults.
  • Respond to service outages and performance issues by performing on-site or remote troubleshooting and repair.
  • Conduct site surveys with GPS-enabled tools and interpret engineering drawings to plan cable routes and splice points.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on network components to minimise downtime and optimise performance.
  • Document all installation activities, test results, equipment usage, and inventory changes accurately in company systems.
  • Ensure every job follows industry safety standards and company procedures, especially when working at heights or in confined spaces.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience installing and maintaining fiber optic cables in live networks.
  • Proven ability to perform fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, and cable termination to commercial standards.
  • Experience using OTDRs, optical power meters, and visual fault locators for testing and troubleshooting.
  • Solid grasp of fiber optic industry standards (e.g., TIA/EIA) and structured cabling best practices.
  • Certifications such as CFOT or FOA are considered a strong plus.
  • Valid Class BCE driver’s licence to travel between job sites.
  • Comfortable lifting and carrying heavy technical equipment, working on ladders or poles, and entering confined spaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret network diagrams, blueprints, and installation plans accurately.
  • Strong analytical thinking for diagnosing faults and selecting the right repair method.
  • Good verbal communication and customer-facing skills to explain technical issues clearly.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for report preparation and data entry.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and night shifts when needed.
