Electrician

Role Overview

This role is for a qualified electrician supporting the Defence Infrastructure Organisation at the British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK). You will carry out inspections, maintenance, fault diagnosis, and emergency repairs on low-voltage domestic and industrial electrical systems, ensuring all work meets BS 7671 and MOD Safety Rules. Your day-to-day activity directly supports the safety and operational readiness of military facilities, from routine servicing to 24-hour emergency call-outs.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform minor electrical installation, inspection, and maintenance work on domestic and industrial systems in line with the latest BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations, including white goods servicing and safety checks.
• Review and update maintenance records to confirm electrical infrastructure remains compliant, and isolate or make safe any faulty or dangerous equipment following MOD Safety Rules and Procedures.
• Use and maintain calibrated test equipment to verify the function, operation, and accuracy of finished components and installations against functional specifications.
• Read and interpret technical data, drawings, and work specifications to determine inspection procedures, and produce simple installation drawings and material quantities as needed.
• Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour rotational basis, including evenings, weekends, and holidays during special events, carrying out repairs and directing follow-up actions.
• Keep the workshop and work sites clean and safe, correctly use and store tools, materials, and PPE, and account for all issued items and unused stock.
• Understand and comply with risk assessments, site safety orders, and Health and Safety legislation, including COSHH, manual handling, and the Electrical Safety Rule Book.
• Mentor and train junior electricians and apprentices, monitor their progress, provide constructive feedback, and encourage a positive, inclusive team culture.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Essential: Minimum Trade Test 1 in Electrical with at least three years of relevant working experience, plus a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
• Essential: Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve non-routine maintenance and repair issues on low-voltage installations and equipment.
• Essential: Strong spoken and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili, with the ability to prepare clear verbal and written reports.
• Essential: Willingness to participate in 24-hour duty engineer rosters and respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.
• Essential: Sound understanding of occupational hazards and standard safety practices, with the discipline to apply protective measures consistently.
• Desirable: Valid Kenya driving licence (Class B, C, and C1) and comfort operating motorised and hand tools.
• Desirable: Training or experience in modern technologies such as PV solar panels and solar water heating installations, and fire alarm system programming.
• Desirable: Awareness of the Big 6 compliance areas (gas, fire, asbestos, legionella, electrical, and fuels) and relevant UK, national, and local codes including BS 7671 and IET Wiring Regulations.
• Desirable: C&G 2391 testing and inspection qualification, plus working knowledge of MOD Safety Rules and Procedures, especially JSP 375 Volume 3 Chapter 3.
• Desirable: Experience in supervising or developing junior staff, and the ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team.
