Role Overview

This role focuses on ensuring visually impaired students have equal access to academic materials, exams, and classroom experiences. Day to day, you will convert textbooks and handouts into Braille or accessible digital formats, operate transcription software and Braille embossers, and provide real-time reading support during lectures and assessments. Your work directly enables students with visual impairments to participate fully in university life and meet their learning goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Convert printed academic content—including lecture notes, assignments, and reference texts—into Braille, large print, audio files, or other accessible digital formats.
  • Operate assistive technologies such as Braille embossers, screen readers, and transcription software to produce materials on schedule.
  • Provide individual reading and transcription services to visually impaired students during lectures, tutorials, and examinations.
  • Support students with disabilities by setting up and troubleshooting adaptive devices used in classrooms and exam halls.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure course materials are received early enough for conversion and distribution before deadlines.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all academic documents and examination materials handled in the course of duties.
  • Assist with orientation programmes that help new visually impaired students navigate campus resources, library access, and assistive technology tools.
  • Promote disability inclusion by advising on best practices for accessible learning and participating in university-wide support initiatives.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a specialisation in Special Needs Education, plus at least 3 years of relevant work experience in a recognised institution.
  • Option 2: Diploma in Education with a specialisation in Special Needs Education, plus at least 5 years of relevant work experience in a recognised institution.
  • Hands-on experience operating Braille embossers and using transcription software (e.g., Duxbury, Braille Blaster) to produce alternative format materials.
  • Solid understanding of accessible learning formats for visually impaired learners, including Braille standards, audio description, and digital accessibility guidelines.
  • Ability to work independently under time constraints while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
