Role Overview
This role leads retail credit risk activity, balancing sound lending decisions with the needs of customers and the commercial goals of the business. You will shape credit strategies and policies, oversee the quality and control of credit decisions, and work closely with business, risk, and operations partners to manage portfolio performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with business teams to develop, implement, and maintain credit strategies, policies, and processes.
- Review and sanction credit proposals within delegated authority, using sound judgement to approve or decline applications and uphold consistent lending standards.
- Monitor credit quality through sampling and oversight, and ensure the team follows policy, governance requirements, portfolio controls, and agreed data-integrity responsibilities.
- Manage lending discretions across Retail Credit and Credit Operations, and help maintain satisfactory audit outcomes through consistent procedural compliance.
- Work with Group Risk, business, operations, conformance, and relevant regional stakeholders on credit matters and policy development.
- Assess pricing and profitability models and challenge assumptions where needed to support appropriate risk-adjusted value; customer-level sign-off remains with the business.
- Set and maintain portfolio approaches for remedial action on underperforming accounts.
- Build effective partnerships across risk and retail business teams, represent Retail Credit Risk in relevant forums, and lead team development, performance management, and succession planning.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Business degree in a quantitative or financial discipline, such as mathematical finance, actuarial science, economics, or statistics.
- Comprehensive technical credit expertise, including the ability to evaluate lending proposals and manage the balance between risk and return.
- Working knowledge of credit risk policies, procedures, pricing, Group credit strategies, and relevant products.
- Understanding of the local country structure and business strategy, alongside a clear grasp of the role of risk within the organisation.
- Experience leading and developing a team, including coaching, performance development, and succession planning.
- Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to negotiate, influence, delegate, and build productive stakeholder relationships.
- Sound commercial and industry awareness.
