Community Oral Health Officer

Role Overview

This role places a qualified oral health professional at the centre of community-based dental care, balancing hands-on clinical treatment with preventive outreach. You will spend your days providing routine dental procedures, examining patients, and educating individuals and groups on proper oral hygiene practices — all while ensuring that care reaches underserved populations. Your work is essential to reducing the prevalence of oral disease and improving long-term public health outcomes in the communities we serve.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive oral examinations and deliver appropriate treatments such as scaling, polishing, fluoride application, and simple extractions within your scope of practice.
• Develop and deliver oral health education sessions for schools, community groups, and health facilities, tailoring messages to different age groups and cultural contexts.
• Plan and participate in mobile outreach and screening camps to identify patients in need of treatment or referral.
• Maintain accurate patient records, treatment notes, and referral documentation in line with clinical and regulatory standards.
• Identify patients requiring specialist care and coordinate referrals to dentists or other medical professionals.
• Manage infection control protocols, sterilisation of instruments, and safe disposal of clinical waste.
• Monitor and report on community oral health trends, helping to shape preventive programmes and health promotion strategies.
• Collaborate with nurses, community health workers, and local administrators to integrate oral care into broader primary health initiatives.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Community Oral Health from a recognised institution.
• A valid and current practicing licence, with registration maintained in good standing.
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make clear decisions under pressure, especially in field or resource-constrained settings.
• Strong results orientation — able to plan, execute, and deliver measurable health outcomes within set timelines.
• High level of professional integrity, confidentiality, and ethical conduct when handling patient information and community trust.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse populations respectfully.
