Clinical Officer

Role Overview

As a Clinical Officer, you will be the first point of clinical contact for patients walking through our doors each day — taking histories, examining, diagnosing, and treating everything from routine infections to chronic lifestyle diseases. Your work spans outpatient consultation, minor surgical and procedural care, and preventive services, and it sits at the centre of how we keep our community healthy and our facility compliant. Beyond the consulting room, you will contribute to public health campaigns and uphold the clinical, ethical, and regulatory standards that protect both patients and the institution.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose, and treat patients presenting with common medical and surgical conditions, initiating appropriate investigations and adjusting treatment plans based on results and clinical response.
• Deliver preventive and promotive care, including immunisation, screening, growth and development monitoring, family planning counselling, and health education for patients and their families.
• Manage non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma through structured follow-up, medication review, lifestyle counselling, and referral where specialist input is needed.
• Perform minor surgical and diagnostic procedures within your scope of practice, and provide wound care, dressings, and post-operative follow-up.
• Respond promptly to medical emergencies, initiating resuscitation and stabilisation in line with Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support protocols before escalation.
• Maintain accurate, timely clinical records and enter data into the facility's health information system for reporting, audit, and disease surveillance purposes.
• Participate in public health initiatives, community outreach, and outbreak response activities as directed by the facility or county health authorities.
• Work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory staff, and community health workers, referring patients appropriately and contributing to case reviews and continuous quality improvement.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Clinical Medicine from a recognised institution — this is a non-negotiable requirement.
• Current registration with the Clinical Officers Council and a valid, active practising licence.
• At least one year of post-internship clinical experience gained in a public or private hospital setting, ideally in a high-volume facility with a diverse patient mix.
• Demonstrated competence in the management of non-communicable diseases, including long-term patient follow-up and treatment adjustment.
• Valid certificates in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
• Strong hands-on clinical and diagnostic skills, with the precision and attention to detail that patient safety demands.
• Comfortable using computers for clinical data entry, basic analysis, and generation of reports.
• A genuine team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build rapport with patients and collaborate smoothly across the clinical team.
• Resilient, compassionate, and diplomatic under pressure, with sound analytical judgement and the self-initiative to work with minimal supervision.
• Able to multitask effectively and prioritise competing demands in a fast-paced clinical environment.
