Role Overview
This is a front-line retail sales position with a building materials supplier, and the work shifts constantly between the shop floor and the field. You will spend part of each day helping walk-in customers — contractors, tradespeople and DIY buyers — turn a rough project description into an accurate product list, and the rest of it hunting down new business through referrals, cold calls, site visits and trade events. The role matters because it sits at the point where revenue is actually won or lost: a well-advised customer buys the right materials, comes back next time, and tells others, while every quote and interaction you log in the CRM keeps the telesales, warehouse and logistics teams moving without having to chase you for details.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend to walk-in customers, ask enough questions to understand the job they are doing, and recommend building materials that fit their project, budget and skill level.
- Grow the customer base proactively through referrals, cold calling, site visits, online and social media research, networking events, trade shows and inbound enquiries.
- Explain product benefits, pricing structures and real-world applications so customers can make confident purchasing decisions without over- or under-buying.
- Maintain current, detailed knowledge of the full retail range, including new lines, substitutes and stock availability, and use that knowledge to spot upselling and cross-selling openings.
- Prepare quotations, process orders and record transactions accurately in HubSpot CRM, keeping every customer conversation, sale and enquiry captured in the system.
- Work open quotations and pending orders through to closure, following up with customers until a decision is reached rather than waiting for them to return.
- Partner with the Telesales Team to turn inbound leads into in-store purchases, and with warehouse and logistics colleagues to make sure orders are fulfilled on time.
- Keep retail displays organised, well stocked and visually presentable, support stock counts and inventory updates, and flag availability gaps before they affect a sale.
- Handle customer complaints calmly and professionally, resolving what you can and escalating anything beyond your authority.
- Meet agreed individual and store sales targets while building repeat business and long-term relationships with regular customers.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Sales, Marketing, Business Administration or a closely related discipline is preferred.
- At least 2 years of experience in a sales or customer-facing role; a background in construction, hardware or retail is an advantage.
- Practical experience with CRM software — HubSpot is preferred — plus comfortable use of basic point-of-sale systems.
- Ability to absorb and explain technical product information in plain language to customers with varying levels of building knowledge.
- Confidence and persistence in outbound prospecting, including cold calling and face-to-face site visits.
- Strong numerical accuracy for quoting, pricing and order entry, with careful attention to detail in record-keeping.
- Self-organised approach to follow-up: able to track multiple open quotations and pending orders without letting them stall.
- Team-oriented working style, since the role depends on close coordination with telesales, warehouse and logistics colleagues.
