Role Overview
This position keeps assigned sports areas running smoothly from day to day. The person in the role prepares and looks after facilities and equipment, keeps spaces clean and safe, and gives members and guests friendly, practical help so they can take part in sports and recreation without avoidable delays or risks. Their work directly affects how welcoming, well-maintained and safe the sports sections feel, and it helps the wider team deliver a dependable member experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out regular cleaning, tidying and hygiene checks across assigned sports areas, including playing surfaces, surrounding spaces and shared facilities, so they remain presentable and ready for use.
- Set up, inspect and pack away sports equipment according to the needs of each activity, confirming that items are complete, safe and in working order before members use them.
- Handle, store and care for equipment correctly to prevent avoidable damage, loss or misuse, and flag items that need repair or replacement.
- Welcome members and guests, respond to routine questions and requests, and direct more complex enquiries to the appropriate colleague or supervisor.
- Follow health, safety and emergency procedures during daily operations, maintain basic first aid awareness, and report incidents, hazards or near misses promptly.
- Manage waste and maintain environmental standards in sports and recreation areas, including sorting disposables and keeping storage areas orderly.
- Apply club rules, procedures and service standards within assigned sections, coordinating with colleagues to support activities, bookings and peak periods.
- Monitor the condition and availability of equipment and facilities throughout shifts, taking action to resolve minor issues and escalating matters that require maintenance or management attention.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: KCSE or an equivalent secondary school qualification.
- Experience: At least one year in a support role within a sports, leisure or recreation facility.
- First aid: Awareness of first aid practices; formal basic first aid training is an advantage.
- Facilities and equipment knowledge: Familiarity with the facilities, equipment and appropriate uses common to sports and leisure settings, including correct handling, storage and maintenance.
- Health and safety: Understanding of basic safety practices for the workplace, sports facilities and personal protection.
- Customer service: Ability to interact courteously, patiently and helpfully with members and guests.
- Cleanliness and hygiene: Knowledge of cleaning, hygiene and orderly upkeep requirements for sports and recreation spaces.
- Environmental practices: Awareness of suitable waste handling and environmentally responsible practices in a sports facility setting.
- Club procedures: Ability to learn and follow club rules, procedures and standards that apply to assigned sports sections.
- Physical readiness: Capacity to perform active, hands-on tasks such as moving equipment, setting up areas and maintaining facilities throughout a shift.
