Assistant Accountant

Role Overview

This role provides hands-on accounting support across the finance function, keeping daily records accurate and ready for audit. It covers routine transactions, reconciliations, payroll assistance, and the financial documentation that feeds reporting, statutory compliance, and audits. The position also serves as a first line for routine finance queries from staff and members, escalating complex matters to the Accountant.

Key Responsibilities

• Reconcile bank accounts and other assigned balances, investigating and clearing differences promptly.
• Enter routine accounting transactions, including monthly accruals, prepayments, and journal adjustments, while keeping underlying schedules and backup documentation complete.
• Contribute to account analysis, reconstruct missing or unclear records, and assemble audit schedules.
• Help reconcile supplier balances, compile payment documentation, and support payroll runs, payroll journal entries, and related schedules.
• Update the fixed asset register and its depreciation schedules.
• Track member accounts, help produce member statements, and reconcile balances.
• Chase and collect needed financial paperwork from club departments, maintain orderly filing, and keep records ready for audit in line with set procedures.
• Answer everyday finance questions from staff and members, passing complex or unresolved cases to the Accountant, and take on other reasonable duties assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Commerce, Accounting, or a related discipline.
• Currently working toward CPA Level 4–5.
• 1–2 years of hands-on accounting or finance experience, including independent work on routine transactions and reconciliations.
• Solid grounding in basic accounting principles and practical knowledge of bank reconciliations, journals and ledgers, payroll accounting, fixed assets, member accounts, audit documentation, financial filing, and accounting systems.
• Ability to maintain orderly, complete financial records and produce supporting schedules for review.
• Comfortable coordinating with colleagues outside finance to gather required documentation.
• Strong attention to detail and sound judgement in flagging unusual items to the Accountant.
