Role Overview
You will act as the on-shift leader for steam generation and power production, taking ownership of safe, reliable and efficient utility plant operations. Your day-to-day focus is directing a team of boiler operators through start-ups, load changes and shutdowns, while resolving operational issues before they impact production. This shift-based supervisory role is central to keeping cogeneration and utility systems running at peak availability and in strict compliance with statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct shift operations across boilers, turbine generators and auxiliary systems, setting priorities to meet production and efficiency targets.
- Lead and supervise a rotating team of boiler operators, assigning duties, checking work quality and maintaining logbook discipline.
- Manage unit start-ups, shutdowns, load swings and equipment isolations, following safe operating procedures and ensuring clear communication between shifts.
- Diagnose operational faults such as pressure drops, combustion upsets, vibration issues or auxiliary equipment failures, and implement corrective actions quickly.
- Coordinate with maintenance and engineering teams to plan shutdowns, execute repair work and review equipment condition after maintenance interventions.
- Ensure all statutory inspections, permit-to-work requirements, lock-out/tag-out practices and safety audits are carried out on schedule and correctly documented.
- Monitor fuel and biomass supply levels, manage feed hoppers, and fine-tune boiler firing rates to balance fuel consumption with steam and power demand.
- Respond to emergencies, lead incident containment, and produce accurate shift reports covering output, anomalies, maintenance actions and personnel performance.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering (Plant Option) or a directly related engineering discipline.
- 5 to 10 years of hands-on experience in boiler plants, cogeneration units or utility-scale power generation operations.
- Proven experience supervising shift crews and coordinating boiler operator teams in a live industrial plant environment.
- Solid working knowledge of steam generation principals, boiler pressure parts, combustion systems, steam turbines, generators, cooling systems and auxiliary equipment.
- Familiarity with statutory inspection cycles, pressure vessel regulations, safety procedures and structured maintenance planning.
- Good command of SAP for maintenance notifications and work orders, plus Microsoft Office for shift logs and reports; AutoCAD proficiency is a distinct advantage.
- Strong leadership and manpower planning ability, with clear communication and the capacity to make sound decisions during abnormal operating conditions.
- Demonstrated problem-solving mindset and hands-on troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical and control interfaces.
