Your primary objective will be to ensure maximum fleet uptime and mechanical reliability by orchestrating day-to-day vehicle diagnostics, scheduled preventive maintenance, and complex structural repairs. This position bridges advanced automotive troubleshooting with active floor leadership; you will coordinate technician teams, manage spare part inventories, and supervise the mechanical upkeep of light vehicles alongside heavy industrial mobile equipment. The role demands an assertive, safety-conscious engineer who thrives in a demanding, high-stakes operational environment.
Scope of Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Mechanical Oversight
- Coordinate the daily mechanical maintenance, overhaul, and tuning workflows for a diverse corporate fleet.
- Map and execute robust preventive maintenance calendars to minimize unexpected field breakdowns and extend machinery lifespans.
- Set up advanced computerized vehicle diagnostic systems to trace engine faults, electrical failures, and hydraulic drops accurately.
- Supervise the complete mechanical overhaul of braking assemblies, transmissions, fuel systems, and suspension components.
Heavy Equipment Asset Management
- Oversee specialized technical servicing for heavy mobile machinery, including wheel loaders, excavators, tippers, and specialized earth-moving units.
- Monitor hydraulic pressure systems, undercarriage components, and heavy-duty structural welds to ensure maximum machinery safety.
- Troubleshoot specific high-power engine strains and drilling apparatus faults, implementing rapid corrective adjustments.
- Ensure all heavy-duty assets comply with international engineering performance baselines and national transport safety codes.
Workshop Operations & Team Leadership
- Supervise, delegate, and audit the daily performance of multi-skilled workshop mechanics, welders, and auto-electricians.
- Enforce strict workshop tool accountability, ensuring specialized calibration gear and pneumatic machinery are handled responsibly.
- Lead daily morning toolbox talks, prioritizing upcoming repair tasks and reinforcing mandatory workplace safety rules.
- Conduct technical training and onboarding for apprentice technicians to elevate the workshop's baseline troubleshooting capacity.
Resource Allocation & Reporting
- Trace the usage metrics of spare parts, specialized lubricants, tires, and raw consumables, minimizing floor waste.
- Draft precise component requisition documents, identifying dependable suppliers to secure premium replacement parts at optimal rates.
- Compile clear daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance summaries, detailing fleet downtime stats, material costs, and workshop performance markers.
- Investigate shop floor safety incidents, driving corrective remediation steps to preserve an accident-free working environment.
Skills & Experience Required
Minimum Entry Criteria
- Academic Foundation: Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Plant Engineering, or a directly matching technical line.
- Workshop Longevity: Minimum of 3 years of active, progressive experience operating within a supervisory or foreman capacity inside a structured fleet maintenance or machinery repair setup.
- Diagnostic Acuity: Strong, verifiable expertise handling professional multi-brand vehicle scanners, electrical schematics, and mechanical engineering layouts.
- Heavy Machinery Exposure: Practical background repairing and maintaining heavy mobile industrial assets (e.g., excavators, loaders, drilling rigs, tippers) is a highly valued advantage.
Core Competencies
- Assertive Direction: Strong personal presence with a proven track record of maintaining strict discipline and productivity across industrial repair teams.
- Analytical Resolution: Rapid troubleshooting capacity to diagnose complex mechanical failures on-site under tight project schedules.
- Logistical Precision: High capacity for scheduling multi-vehicle maintenance programs without disrupting active operational timelines.
What We Offer
- Advanced Technical Command: Manage a large, diverse fleet spanning high-end light transport vehicles to heavy industrial earth-moving assets.
- Operational Autonomy: Take full leadership charge of a modern engineering depot, implementing your own workflow optimizations and efficiency frameworks.
- Career Growth Track: Build an elite engineering management resume within a structurally sound, scaling firm operating at the heart of Kenya's industrial infrastructure.
