Adult Literacy Intern- Narok

Role Overview

This role places an adult educator at the centre of local efforts to build foundational learning among adults who did not complete or never attended formal schooling. Working in villages and other community venues, you will run regular literacy and numeracy sessions that help learners apply reading, writing and number skills to everyday tasks such as trading, farming, managing health matters and dealing with institutions. By turning basic education into something learners can use immediately, the position strengthens household livelihoods, personal confidence and fuller participation in community and civic life.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare and facilitate regular adult literacy and numeracy sessions in community-based venues, following the national adult literacy curriculum at Basic Adult Education Levels I, II and III.
• Assess incoming learners to establish their current skill level, place them in the appropriate learning group and track individual progress across the programme cycle.
• Adapt simple, locally relevant materials and activities that connect reading, writing and numeracy to learners' real circumstances, including market transactions, agricultural work, health information and household record keeping.
• Apply participatory, learner-centred methods suited to adults, creating a respectful environment in which learners feel able to speak up, practise and make mistakes.
• Mobilise and retain learners by working with community leaders, local committees and existing groups to identify participants and sustain attendance over time.
• Keep accurate attendance registers, learner records and progress reports, and share them with the programme team for monitoring and reporting purposes.
• Take part in facilitator training, review meetings and peer learning sessions, and support other educators delivering the same curriculum in the area.
• Encourage the participation of women, older learners and anyone facing barriers to education, and connect learners to further learning or livelihood opportunities where these exist.

Requirements & Qualifications

• KCSE certificate or an equivalent secondary-level qualification.
• A Certificate in Adult Education, or an equivalent qualification, from a government-recognised institution.
• Training in Basic Adult Education Levels I, II and III under the national adult literacy curriculum.
• Solid knowledge and understanding of the local community, culture and context within the area of deployment, and the ability to work respectfully within local norms and structures.
• Fluency in English and Kiswahili, together with fluency in Maasai as the relevant local community language.
• Confident group facilitation skills, including session planning, managing a mixed-ability adult class and keeping learners engaged throughout a full programme cycle.
• Practical record-keeping and reporting ability, with the accuracy needed to track attendance, learner progress and outcomes.
• Self-motivation and reliability, including the capacity to organise your own schedule, travel within the community and work with limited day-to-day supervision.

Location: Positions are available in Kajiado and Narok counties, and applicants should state clearly which county they are applying for.
