Adult Literacy Intern

Role Overview

This position puts you at the front line of adult learning in a community-based setting, where you will teach foundational literacy and numeracy to adults who have had limited or interrupted access to formal schooling. Day to day, you will prepare and run lessons, gauge where each learner is starting from, and adapt your teaching so that reading, writing and number skills connect to the real demands of adult life. The work matters because these foundational skills are what allow learners to earn a better living, grow personally, and take a fuller part in the life of their community.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and facilitate literacy and numeracy lessons for adult learners at Basic Adult Education Levels I, II and III, following the national adult literacy curriculum.
• Carry out initial assessments to establish learners' existing skill levels, then group and pace instruction accordingly.
• Teach in English, Kiswahili and the local community language as required, switching languages to make sure every learner understands the material.
• Develop and adapt teaching and learning materials that suit adult learners and reflect the realities of the local context.
• Track learner attendance, progress and achievement, and keep accurate records for programme reporting.
• Mobilise and retain adult learners by engaging with community members, local leaders and existing community structures.
• Create an inclusive, respectful classroom environment that accommodates the work and family commitments of adult participants.
• Take part in programme meetings, refresher training and community sensitisation activities as required.

Requirements & Qualifications

• KCSE certificate or an equivalent qualification.
• Certificate in Adult Education or an equivalent qualification from a government-recognised institution.
• Training in Basic Adult Education Levels I, II and III under the national adult literacy curriculum.
• Solid knowledge and understanding of the local community, its culture and its context within the area of deployment.
• Fluency in English, Kiswahili and the relevant local/community language (Maasai).
• Comfort working with adult learners and the confidence to lead group learning sessions.
