Job Description

Position Title: Accountant

Reports To: Managing Director

Industry Sector: Food & Beverage Ingredients Distribution

Salary Range: Kshs. 45,000 – 55,000

Employment Nature: Full-Time

Location: Nairobi (with occasional regional travel)

Role Purpose

We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Accountant to steer the financial operations of our distribution business. Your primary objective is to maintain absolute financial accuracy, robust internal controls, and flawless statutory compliance within a fast-paced, multi-warehouse environment. This role goes beyond standard data entry; you will actively manage inventory valuation, investigate stock shrinkage, oversee credit management, and deliver precise management accounts that directly inform executive decision-making and protect corporate margins.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Financial Reporting & Ledger Governance

  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements within 5 working days of month-end.

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and complete general ledger reconciliations.

  • Maintain the corporate fixed asset register and calculate accurate depreciation schedules.

  • Supervise the integrity of the ERP system and support the automation of financial workflows.

Inventory Accounting & Cost Control

  • Monitor stock movements and valuations across multiple storage warehouses and distribution channels.

  • Reconcile physical stock counts against ERP records, maintaining an inventory variance rate of less than 1%.

  • Analyze product margins, landed costs, import clearing cost allocations, and distribution expenses.

  • Investigate stock discrepancies, damages, expiries, and manage provisions for bad stock.

Tax Compliance & Treasury Management

  • Prepare and file VAT, PAYE, withholding tax, and corporate tax returns on time to ensure 100% compliance.

  • Lead the preparation of annual budgets, monitor departmental spending, and conduct variance analysis.

  • Monitor daily cash positions, perform weekly bank reconciliations, and handle foreign currency transactions.

  • Coordinate internal or external audits and ensure full closure of all audit findings.

Credit Control & Debt Management

  • Monitor customer credit limits, analyze aging reports, and drive active debt collection efforts.

  • Evaluate customer payment trends and recommend provisions for doubtful debts when necessary.

Requirements & Skills

Minimum Criteria

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.

  • Certification: Professional accounting qualifications such as CPA(K) or ACCA are mandatory.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of progressive finance experience, preferably within FMCG, manufacturing, or distribution industries.

  • Systems: Strong proficiency in modern ERP accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel.

  • Analytical Precision: Ability to interpret complex financial trends and enforce tight internal control policies.

  • Leadership Ability: Competence to supervise workflows and mentor junior accounting staff.
