Role Overview
This position places an experienced equipment certification specialist aboard a U.S. Navy installation on Diego Garcia, a remote Indian Ocean island. You will own the full lifecycle of Wheeled Handling Equipment (WHE) certification for personnel, from initial evaluation through periodic re-certification, helping ensure that every operator on site is verified, current, and compliant with Navy and Department of Defense standards. Your oversight directly supports safe, mission-ready material handling operations in a challenging, isolated environment where equipment reliability and operator discipline are critical.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer the WHE certification and qualification program, including scheduling, conducting, and scoring both practical demonstrations and written knowledge assessments for equipment operators.
- Evaluate each candidate's hands-on proficiency with assigned wheeled handling equipment, documenting results against established Navy and DoD operational standards.
- Maintain accurate, current certification records for all personnel, including initial certifications, expiration dates, and re-certification status.
- Coordinate with supervisors, safety officers, and training staff to align certification activities with site-specific requirements and operational tempo.
- Proactively track certification expirations and issue reminders to ensure no operator works without valid credentials.
- Support internal inspections and external audits by preparing certification files and demonstrating compliance with program requirements.
- Provide clear guidance to personnel on WHE safety practices, proper equipment use, and certification procedures.
- Assist in identifying training gaps or operator performance issues and recommend corrective actions to leadership.
Requirements & Qualifications
- 1–3 years of directly relevant experience in equipment operation, operator training, certification administration, or safety compliance.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical or safety certifications are a plus.
- Working knowledge of wheeled handling equipment types, operating principles, and common safety hazards.
- Ability to assess operator performance objectively and apply certification standards consistently.
- Comfort with recordkeeping, database entry, and standard office software for tracking and reporting.
- Valid passport with at least one year of remaining validity at the time of hire, and willingness to travel internationally for an extended deployment.
- Ability to pass contract medical requirements and maintain medical readiness for the full deployment duration.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain facility credentials and base access authorizations.
- Preferred: prior work in an austere overseas environment with a multinational workforce; excellent organizational, time management, and customer service skills; valid driver's license and any visa required under the State Department Foreign Clearance Guide.
What We Offer / Why Join
This is a rare opportunity to apply your certification expertise in a unique, strategically significant U.S. Navy program far from a typical stateside assignment. Working on Diego Garcia means operating in a close-knit, mission-focused community where your role has direct, visible impact on safety and operational readiness. You will gain experience managing certification programs under strict DoD standards in one of the most isolated and operationally demanding environments in the world.
