Job Description

Role Overview

This role centers on keeping a busy manufacturing plant running through precise metalwork and dependable welding. You will spend your days on the workshop floor cutting, shaping, and joining metal components for production machinery, structural frames, and repair jobs, working from technical drawings to meet exact specifications. Your output directly supports the plant's uptime and product quality, making you a key link between fabrication work and ongoing industrial maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out MIG, TIG, and stick welding tasks on production parts, equipment mounts, and structural steelwork, matching the chosen process to the material and job requirements.
  • Read engineering blueprints, welding symbols, and assembly drawings to determine joint types, dimensions, and material preparation steps before starting any cut or weld.
  • Prepare metal surfaces by cutting, grinding, beveling, and fitting components, then verify alignment and dimensional accuracy using measuring tools such as calipers, squares, and tape measures.
  • Set up welding machines with the correct voltage, amperage, wire feed speed, and shielding gas flow for each material thickness and joint configuration.
  • Inspect finished welds for common defects like porosity, undercut, incomplete fusion, and slag traps, then grind or re-weld as needed to meet quality standards.
  • Perform routine upkeep on welding gear, including torch consumables, gas regulators, cables, and filters, and flag larger faults to the maintenance supervisor for repair.
  • Keep the work area and gas storage in line with safety rules, using the required protective equipment and managing hot work permits and flammable materials properly.
  • Maintain daily records of jobs completed, materials used, and equipment issues so the workshop has an accurate log for planning and repair decisions.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in welding technology, mechanical engineering, fabrication, or a closely related technical field from a recognized institution.
  • At least three years of practical, hands-on welding experience in an industrial plant, workshop, or fabrication environment.
  • Solid working knowledge of MIG, TIG, and stick welding processes, including how to adjust machine settings and troubleshoot common weld faults.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, CAD prints, and welding symbols with little supervision, and turn those drawings into accurate finished parts.
  • Familiarity with mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, including how each metal behaves under heat and which filler materials to use.
  • Certification from a recognized body such as AWS, CWB, or NITA is an added advantage; experience in plastics or high-volume manufacturing is also a plus.
  • Good manual dexterity and physical stamina for standing, bending, lifting, and working in a hot, noisy workshop environment while maintaining precision.
  • Disciplined approach to workshop safety, including consistent use of PPE and respect for company safety procedures and hot work policies.
