Job Description

Role Overview

The Welder works inside an industrial workshop, turning engineering drawings into finished metal components and repaired assemblies. Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, the position combines hands-on fabrication with close-tolerance fitting, welding, and quality checks. The employer depends on this role to keep production output on schedule while maintaining structural strength, dimensional accuracy, and safe work practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and assemble metal components using manual and semi-automatic welding processes, following design specifications and production priorities.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, sketches, and work orders to determine dimensions, joint types, and the correct sequence of operations.
  • Measure, mark, cut, and shape raw metal stock with grinders, cutting torches, drills, and other powered fabrication tools.
  • Align, clamp, and fit up parts before welding so assemblies meet required tolerances, structural strength, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Inspect completed welds and fabricated units for fusion depth, alignment, and surface finish, correcting defects or escalating issues promptly.
  • Set up, operate, and perform routine maintenance on welding rigs, power equipment, and safety gear, while managing rods, shielding gases, wire reels, and consumable supplies.
  • Follow occupational health, safety, and environmental rules, wear mandatory PPE, and keep the workshop clean, organised, and free of hazards.
  • Coordinate with project engineers and workshop managers to meet daily fabrication targets and deadlines, reporting material shortages, machine malfunctions, or safety risks immediately.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Formal training through a diploma in welding and fabrication, mechanical engineering, or a comparable recognised technical trade qualification.
  • Hands-on experience as a Welder or Fabricator in a busy manufacturing, workshop, construction, or structural engineering environment, not only classroom training.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and convert technical engineering drawings, schematics, and sketches into accurate physical metal structures.
  • Competence in metal joining methods, thermal cutting, joint preparation, and finish grinding.
  • Skill with manual and semi-automatic welding equipment, including selecting settings and consumables for different fabrication jobs.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality control habits, physical stamina, and time-management skills for working under tight deadlines.
  • Team collaboration and clear communication with supervisors, engineers, and workshop colleagues.
  • Commitment to workplace safety regulations and correct use of personal protective equipment.

What We Offer / Why Join

This is a full-time, on-site role based in Athi River, Machakos County, with a monthly salary of KSh 30,000.
