Volunteer Pharmaceutical Technologist

Role Overview

As a Pharmaceutical Technologist, you will keep the facility's dispensing pharmacy running smoothly each day, working under the direct guidance of the facility in charge. Your attention to detail directly safeguards patient safety, ensures that medicines are stored and issued correctly, and helps the clinical team identify prescribing issues before they escalate. Beyond handing out medications, you will be accountable for inventory accuracy, cold chain integrity, and the timely reporting that keeps the whole supply chain transparent and compliant.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the daily flow of the dispensing units, verifying that every prescription is filled correctly and that medicines leave the pharmacy in the right quantities with the right labels.
• Act as the first point of contact for patient and staff concerns about medicines, documenting adverse drug reactions, suspected counterfeit or substandard products, and other health product issues, then escalating them through the proper channels.
• Keep the pharmacy shelves and stores adequately stocked, regularly checking stock levels, preventing losses or pilferage, and ensuring that all health supplies are stored safely and logically.
• Apply and enforce all supply chain standard operating procedures, from receiving deliveries to issuing stock, so that every step follows the required protocol and leaves an audit trail.
• Review prescriptions on an ongoing basis to spot unusual prescribing patterns or irrational drug use, flagging any concerns to the supervising pharmacist for follow-up.
• Monitor cold chain equipment daily, recording fridge and cold room temperatures, and promptly acting on any deviation that could compromise temperature-sensitive products.
• Compile and submit inventory management reports, including the monthly Ministry of Health reports for malaria, TB, and HIV programmes, ensuring all figures reach the relevant authorities by the 5th of each month.
• Maintain the tracer drug list, checking availability biweekly and communicating stock status to the clinical team so that essential medicines are always on hand.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or an equivalent qualification.
• A Diploma in Pharmacy from a recognised institution.
• Current enrolment and registration with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.
• At least one year of experience serving as a Pharmaceutical Technologist II in a similar facility.
• A recognised certificate in computer application skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Swahili.
• Proven ability to work ethically and calmly in a high-pressure environment, with solid customer care and teamwork skills.
• Demonstrated performance and merit, supported by work history and measurable results.
