Role Overview

This pharmacy role sits at the centre of daily patient care in a busy hospital environment, balancing clinical accuracy with direct patient interaction. You will screen prescriptions, dispense medications for both inpatients being discharged and outpatients, and act as the medication safety checkpoint before drugs leave the pharmacy. Your work ensures that every order is therapeutically appropriate, correctly dosed, and clearly explained to the patient—making you essential to treatment success and patient wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

• Dispense prescribed medications to outpatients and to inpatients upon discharge, following the pharmacy's standard operating procedures.
• Review each patient's treatment sheet and prescription to verify dosing accuracy, route of administration, therapeutic suitability, and potential drug interactions.
• Counsel every patient on how to take their medication correctly, including timing, storage, expected side effects, and any precautions or warnings.
• Provide accurate, up-to-date drug information to clinicians, nurses, and other medical staff whenever they request guidance on medication use.
• Record all issued medicines promptly and accurately in bin cards, the issue book, and the pharmacy computer system to maintain a clear audit trail.
• Flag any stock shortages, near-expiry products, or discrepancies to the supervising pharmacist to prevent interruptions in patient care.
• Liaise with ward staff to clarify incomplete or unclear prescriptions before dispensing, ensuring no medication is issued without full confidence.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution.
• A minimum of two years of practical pharmacy experience in a hospital or another high-volume health facility.
• Must be registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and hold a valid, current practising licence.
• Strong knowledge of drug dosages, contraindications, side-effect profiles, and common drug interactions.
• Excellent attention to detail when scrutinising prescriptions and maintaining dispensing records.
• Clear communication skills to explain medication instructions to patients and to collaborate effectively with medical and nursing colleagues.
