Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits at the centre of medication management within a hospital environment, where accurate dispensing, sound clinical judgement and tight stock control directly affect patient outcomes. The postholder works alongside doctors, nurses and other clinical staff to ensure that every patient receives the right medicine, in the right dose, at the right time, while keeping full compliance with national pharmacy regulations. It is a hands-on role that blends dispensary work, ward-level pharmaceutical care and record-keeping on the facility's health management information system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Dispense prescriptions accurately and efficiently for inpatients and outpatients, verifying doses, interactions and contraindications before medicines leave the pharmacy.
  • Review patient medication profiles and provide pharmaceutical input during ward rounds, flagging therapy adjustments to the prescribing clinician.
  • Counsel patients and caregivers on correct administration, storage, expected side effects and adherence, using language and explanations they can act on.
  • Manage pharmaceutical stock levels, including ordering, receiving, expiry tracking, secure storage of controlled substances and reconciliation of inventory records.
  • Maintain accurate dispensing and consumption records in the facility's Health Management Information System, and prepare periodic reports on drug utilisation.
  • Monitor and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors through the appropriate channels, contributing to corrective action where needed.
  • Supervise and support pharmaceutical technologists, interns and support staff within the unit, promoting safe practice and good documentation habits.
  • Uphold licensing conditions and professional standards set by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board in all aspects of dispensing and storage.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, or a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology, from a recognised institution.
  • At least three years of working experience after completing internship, with preference given to candidates who have served in a hospital setting.
  • Current registration and a valid practising licence issued by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, particularly in using Health Management Information Systems for recording and reporting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain clinical information clearly to patients and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
