Role Overview
As a registered trainer, you will deliver competency-based instruction in your area of specialisation, turning occupational standards into practical lessons that learners can apply on the job from day one. You will be responsible for planning, teaching and assessing trainees across both theoretical and hands-on sessions, while keeping the workshop, laboratory or training facility operating to the standards expected of an accredited institution. This role sits at the heart of skills development — the quality of your delivery directly determines whether graduates leave with certifications that employers trust and competences that the labour market actually needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare schemes of work, session plans, learning materials and assessment tools aligned to the relevant competency-based curriculum and occupational standards.
- Deliver theoretical and practical training sessions in the assigned trade or technical area, ensuring learners gain demonstrable, hands-on competence.
- Conduct formative and summative assessments, mark learner work, maintain assessment records and prepare candidates for internal and external examinations.
- Supervise learners in workshops, laboratories or simulated work environments, enforcing safe working practices and correct use of tools, equipment and materials.
- Maintain, service and account for training equipment, consumables and tools, reporting faults or replacement needs promptly.
- Track trainee attendance, progress and performance, and provide feedback and academic guidance to learners who need additional support.
- Coordinate industrial attachment, workplace exposure or industry links that connect training to current employer practice.
- Keep your trainer registration and professional competence current, and take part in departmental meetings, curriculum reviews and staff development activities.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications in the area of specialisation being taught.
- A valid TVETA Trainer Registration/Licence for the relevant area of specialisation — this is a mandatory requirement.
- Demonstrated occupational competence and practical, hands-on experience in the trade or technical field, sufficient to instruct and demonstrate skills credibly to learners.
- Working knowledge of competency-based education and training (CBET) principles, including the development and application of assessment tools.
- Ability to plan lessons, manage a training group and adapt delivery to learners with differing levels of prior knowledge.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and maintain accurate training records.
- Commitment to workplace safety and to modelling professional conduct and industry standards for trainees.
- Basic competence with office and record-keeping tools for preparing materials, marks and reports.
