Job Description
Role Overview
This role is central to bridging classroom theory with clinical practice in Medical Surgical Nursing, ensuring students graduate as competent, employable practitioners. Day-to-day, you will deliver lectures and practical sessions, continuously update course materials to reflect current evidence, and mentor students through complex clinical decision-making. Your work directly supports the department’s mission to produce skilled nurses who can meet Kenya’s evolving healthcare demands while contributing to the university’s research and community outreach goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach assigned Medical Surgical Nursing units, including both theoretical coursework and hands-on practical sessions in simulation labs or clinical settings.
- Design and develop new programmes of study from scratch, preparing syllabi, lesson plans, and assessment frameworks aligned with professional standards.
- Regularly review and update Medical Surgical Nursing course content, incorporating recent research, clinical guidelines, and technological advancements.
- Collaborate with fellow faculty on curriculum improvements, interdepartmental initiatives, and the creation of interdisciplinary research projects.
- Conduct independent and collaborative research, writing grant proposals to secure funding for studies that address real-world nursing challenges.
- Actively seek and participate in consultancy projects that apply academic expertise to healthcare institutions, policy bodies, or community organisations.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences, seminars, and webinars to disseminate knowledge and raise the department’s academic profile.
- Provide one-on-one and group mentorship to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, guiding their career pathways and professional development.
- Carry out any additional duties assigned by the Head of Department or specified in the detailed job description.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Master of Science degree in Medical Surgical Nursing from a recognised, accredited university, along with a Bachelor of Science degree in the same field.
- Minimum of three years of post-qualification professional experience, preferably combining clinical practice and academic teaching.
- Demonstrated potential for university-level teaching, with a track record of engaging students and maintaining high academic standards.
- Active research capability, evidenced by publications, conference presentations, or ongoing investigations in nursing science.
- Commitment to community extension work, such as health outreach programmes or partnership projects with local healthcare providers.
- A valid Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) licence, with no history of disciplinary action.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and guide students from diverse backgrounds.
