Role Overview
This academic appointment blends engineering teaching, research supervision, and departmental service. The post holder will guide undergraduate and postgraduate students through coursework, assessment, and research projects while also pursuing funded research and helping shape curriculum and academic plans. The position is central to maintaining teaching standards, expanding scholarly output, and connecting the department with professional engineering practice and external collaborators.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students through lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, seminars, and project work.
- Create examination papers, manage moderation and exam administration, and evaluate scripts, coursework, and other assessments promptly and fairly.
- Guide students through academic planning, progression, research choices, and professional development as an advisor and mentor.
- Design and refresh course content, laboratory guides, case studies, and digital learning resources to keep programmes current and relevant.
- Oversee student research from proposal development to final presentation or defence at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Write grant applications, develop research programmes, and pursue external funding that supports departmental and interdisciplinary priorities.
- Contribute to curriculum review, strategic planning, departmental meetings, accreditation work, and other academic administrative tasks.
- Take part in seminars, workshops, conferences, consultancy, and professional networks to share knowledge and build partnerships within and beyond the university.
Requirements & Qualifications
- An earned PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering or closely related field from an accredited and recognised university, plus registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya.
- Alternatively, a Master's degree in the relevant field from an accredited and recognised university, with at least three years of university teaching, research, or industry experience in special cases.
- For candidates qualifying through the Master's route, a minimum of twenty-four publication points, including at least ten points from refereed journal papers.
- Current registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya.
- Demonstrated ability to teach, assess, and supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Evidence of scholarly activity, research writing, and the capacity to develop competitive funding proposals.
- Strong communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills for student advising, teamwork, and administrative duties.
- Commitment to curriculum development, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional engineering ethics.
