Internal Medicine Consultant

Role Overview

As the internal medicine specialist in this role, you will be the clinician adult patients turn to when their illness is complex, multi-system, or difficult to pin down. Your days will move between outpatient clinics, inpatient ward rounds, and bedside consultations, where you will take responsibility for diagnosing and managing conditions that span cardiology, respiratory, endocrine, renal, gastrointestinal, and infectious disease presentations. The position matters because sound internal medicine practice holds together the diagnostic and treatment decisions of an entire care team, reducing avoidable admissions, shortening hospital stays, and ensuring that patients with chronic conditions receive continuity rather than fragmented care.

Key Responsibilities

• Take full clinical histories, perform comprehensive physical examinations, and formulate differential diagnoses for adults presenting with acute, chronic, and undifferentiated medical complaints.
• Order, interpret, and act on laboratory investigations, imaging, and other diagnostic studies, escalating findings that require urgent intervention.
• Lead inpatient care on assigned wards, including daily reviews, treatment plan adjustments, discharge planning, and follow-up arrangements for patients with long-term conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, and chronic respiratory disease.
• Run scheduled outpatient clinics covering both new referrals and continuing care, adjusting medication regimens and monitoring for complications or therapeutic side effects.
• Respond to inpatient referrals and consult requests from other departments, providing specialist medical opinion and co-managing patients alongside surgical, obstetric, paediatric, and critical care colleagues.
• Participate in the on-call rota, including night and weekend cover, and hand over complex cases clearly to the incoming clinical team.
• Supervise, teach, and mentor medical officers, interns, clinical officers, and nursing staff, reviewing their clinical decisions and supporting their professional development.
• Maintain accurate and timely medical records, contribute to clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, infection prevention practices, and quality improvement initiatives, and comply with all regulatory and ethical standards governing medical practice.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from a recognised institution.
• Master's degree in Internal Medicine.
• Full registration with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
• A valid, current practising licence.
• Demonstrated competence in the independent assessment and management of adult medical inpatients and outpatients, including emergency presentations.
• Strong clinical reasoning, diagnostic, and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands in a busy clinical environment.
• Proven ability to work effectively both as a collaborative team member and as a team leader, including the supervision and development of junior clinical staff.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills for patient counselling, record keeping, handover, and multidisciplinary discussion.
