Tupande Health Safety and Environment Supervisor (Fixed-Term)

Role Overview

This role is the boots-on-the-ground guardian of health, safety, and environmental standards at a biochar production site. You will be responsible for making sure every shift runs safely—from leading toolbox talks and auditing workstations to coaching Safety Marshals and investigating any incidents that occur. By embedding a proactive safety culture on the shop floor, you directly protect the workforce and ensure the facility stays compliant with Kenya’s OSHA, NEMA, and DOSH requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Run daily HSE program activities: supervise risk registers, emergency response plans, and the facility’s safety management system under direction from the Controls, Health, and Safety Specialist.
• Conduct regular safety audits, site inspections, and incident investigations across all production shifts; document findings and escalate serious issues to the Specialist.
• Maintain all HSE records—incident logs, CAPA files, inspection reports—in audit-ready condition for internal reviews and external regulator visits (DOSH, NEMA, county authorities).
• Own on-the-floor HACCP execution: verify that every hazard is identified and communicated to workers before they start a task, and support the Specialist in keeping HACCP documentation up to date for external audits.
• Deliver HSE inductions, toolbox talks, emergency drills, and ongoing training for all facility staff, using programs designed by the Specialist; track and report training completion rates.
• Support shift-designated Safety Marshals (Production Supervisors) to ensure consistent safety standards across all lines, and build a culture where anyone can stop unsafe work without hesitation.
• Perform routine environmental monitoring rounds—check emissions, waste management, water use, and ash/biochar handling—and maintain ambient air quality records for the MRV pipeline in coordination with the MRV Coordinator.
• Coordinate with third-party testing schedules for emissions and leakage under the Specialist’s oversight, and ensure timely escalation of systemic risks or policy questions.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a directly related field.
• At least 2 years of hands-on HSE experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment (biochar, chemical, or heavy industry preferred).
• Certified HSE professional strongly preferred (NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent Kenya-recognised certification).
• Solid working knowledge of Kenya’s Occupational Safety and Health Act (2007) and NEMA regulatory requirements.
• Proven ability to implement and maintain HACCP systems at the operational level in a production setting.
• Strong verbal communication and training facilitation skills, with comfort engaging workers from operators to supervisors.
