Job Description

Role Overview

You will join a hospital-based surgical team as a Theatre Nurse, providing hands-on perioperative care across the full surgical journey. Working closely with surgeons, anesthetists, and ward staff, you will prepare operating rooms, support procedures as a scrub or circulating nurse, and guide patients through recovery. Your attention to aseptic practice and patient safety directly supports smooth surgical outcomes and helps the healthcare team maintain high standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating theatres before each list by checking equipment, sterilising instruments, and arranging sterile supplies for the scheduled procedure.
  • Assist the surgical team during operations by passing instruments, maintaining a sterile field, and anticipating the needs of surgeons and anesthetists.
  • Monitor patients throughout their surgical journey, including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative observations, and post-anesthetic recovery.
  • Deliver scrub, circulating, and recovery nursing duties across multiple surgical specialties, adapting quickly to different procedure types.
  • Apply strict aseptic techniques and infection prevention protocols in all theatre activities, including handling specimens and ensuring correct documentation for laboratory analysis.
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative education to patients and their families, covering treatment plans, medication use, wound care, and preventive health practices.
  • Participate in patient assessment, care planning, and follow-up reviews, documenting progress accurately in patient records.
  • Support emergency surgical interventions as part of the on-call or rapid-response team, maintaining readiness for urgent cases.
  • Contribute to departmental meetings, continuous medical education sessions, and quality improvement initiatives to raise patient care standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) from a recognised institution.
  • Higher Diploma in Peri-operative Nursing, with demonstrated competence in theatre practice.
  • Valid licensure and registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • At least 1–2 years of hands-on clinical nursing experience, ideally including exposure to operating theatre or surgical wards.
  • Sound understanding of sterile technique, infection control principles, and surgical patient safety practices.
  • Ability to remain calm and precise under pressure during long or emergency procedures.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with the surgical team and counselling patients and families.
  • Capacity to maintain accurate, detailed records and follow hospital protocols for specimen handling and documentation.
