Role Overview
Vert Ltd is seeking a field-based Technical Assistant to support its smallholder out-grower operations in Machakos County. Working directly with farmers, the successful candidate will help improve crop production, maintain export-quality and food-safety practices, and coordinate harvest forecasts with the company’s factory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruit and register out-grower farmers, then provide practical guidance on crop husbandry, integrated crop and pest management, sustainability, and export-quality requirements.
- Run farmer training sessions, field demonstrations, and workshops to encourage effective production methods and improve crop performance.
- Guide farm workers on planting, field hygiene, weeding, crop protection, and careful harvesting practices.
- Visit assigned farms to monitor crop development, identify pest and disease risks, and assess soil fertility.
- Check that spray equipment is properly calibrated and oversee pesticide handling and application, including worker-safety procedures.
- Apply block-release checks before harvest and confirm that pre-harvest intervals have been met.
- Keep up-to-date records of farm activities, input use, planting dates, and chemical applications; prepare weekly yield forecasts and compare them with factory intake needs.
- Support quality assurance teams during audits relating to GLOBALG.A.P., HACCP, and FSSC 22000 requirements.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Agriculture, Crop Science, Agronomy, or a closely related field.
- At least three years of practical experience in agricultural extension, farmer advisory services, or out-grower coordination.
- Working knowledge of crop production, pest management, pesticide application and equipment calibration, and export food-safety standards, including GLOBALG.A.P. and HACCP.
- Valid driving licence and demonstrated ability to ride a motorcycle on rural roads.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to establish productive relationships with smallholder farmers.
- Sound practical judgement, independence in field settings, and care in maintaining accurate records.
- Willingness to travel extensively between farms across Machakos County.
What We Offer / Why Join
This is a full-time, on-site field role based in Machakos, with monthly remuneration of KSh 30,000–KSh 50,000. The position offers hands-on involvement in farmer support, crop quality, and export supply coordination.
