Job Description

Role Overview

This position focuses on providing direct surgical support in a dedicated fertility and ART unit, where precision and infection control are mission-critical. Working side-by-side with registered nurses and embryologists, you will be responsible for preparing the operating environment, maintaining aseptic conditions, and ensuring that every instrument and specimen is handled correctly. Your attention to detail directly impacts patient safety and the success of assisted reproduction procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep the operating environment sterile throughout each procedure, continuously observing for any lapse in technique and immediately correcting any risk of contamination.
  • Perform high-level disinfection and instrument sterilization under nursing supervision, following the facility's validated protocols.
  • Work with the circulating nurse to carry out meticulous surgical counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments, verifying everything before, during, and after surgery.
  • Take part in timeout and sign-out procedures to confirm the correct patient, procedure, and site details are communicated to the entire team.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs by passing instruments smoothly and safely, minimizing delays during critical steps.
  • Assist with ART/IVF cases by enforcing double patient identification at every point, and by verifying that all specimen labels match the accompanying documentation.
  • Prepare fertility suites ahead of each scheduled case, ensuring all specialty packs, collection containers, devices, and tools are available and accounted for.
  • Inspect every instrument for full functionality and cleanliness before use, apply enzymatic pretreatment at the end of the case, and report any worn or broken items to the sterile processing team and the supervising nurse.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in perioperative technology from a recognized TVET institution or an equivalent qualification.
  • Valid Heart Saver certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Current practicing license issued by the Kenya Health Professions Oversight Authority (KHPOA).
  • Demonstrated understanding of aseptic technique, surgical instrumentation, and sterilization principles.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure, with strong communication skills for collaborating with surgeons, nurses, and embryologists.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to strict patient safety and specimen integrity standards.
